April 13, 2016 - Waltera Van Gennip, Pastoral Agent for Sturgeon Lake First Nation, died peacefully at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.
The funeral will take place at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Prince Albert, on Saturday, April 16 at 11:00am.
Most Reverend Albert Thévenot, M. Afr. has expressed his gratitude for all the work she, with others, gave so willingly in First Nation ministry and to the people of Sturgeon Lake.
In 1975, as Sisters of Loretto in Abbey, Toronto, Sr. Waltera Van Gennip and Sr. Pat Grisé taught for seven years, working in First Nation ministry in the community of Mobert, Ontario.
In 1982, they travelled to the Diocese of Prince Albert to mission to the population of Sturgeon Lake First Nation, north west of Prince Albert for Emeritus Bishop Blaise Morand.
On August 16, 1983, they began Kateri House in Prince Albert, keeping the ministry home-based to offer flexible hours and a welcoming environment for those seeking pastoral care as requested, where people lived, in their daily environment.
Sent as a missionary by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Roy Wilmhoff joined Kateri's Companions in April 2004. In 2009 he became a permanent member of the lay mission association.
Although Pat passed away on June 13, 2010, Waltera and Roy continued to work with a permanent commitment to mission, always open individuals who might be experiencing a similar calling. The year 2013 marked the 30th anniversary of the association.
